De Maatjes Nature Reserve

De Maatjes is an outstanding natural area featuring reed beds, marshy groves and wet pastures extending beyond the border, in Nieuwmoer. Lying mainly within Dutch territory, ‘De Matjes’ reed beds provide a nesting place for rare reed and meadow birds. The hiking network maps on sale at the Tourist Office (€8) well help you to discover De Maatjes, which is managed by the Flemish Community’s Agency for Nature and Forests.

De Maatjes nature reserve is located to the north-east of Kalmthout, in the hamlet of Nieuwmoer. Parking facilities and an information sign can be found at the fishing lake near Hanneke Wiewau. Close to there is the connection to the hiking network in the Antwerp Campine Moorland and the Baronie.
