Kalmthout arboretum

What?

Kalmthout Arboretum is a world-famous location. This provincial park is home to rare plants from all over the world. Since 1856 the Arboretum has developed into what can only be called a dream-like garden offering visitors something to see with each passing season. Winter is a special season when the witch hazel comes into blossom. Oblivious to the cold or snow, these shrubs produce fragrant, warm-coloured flowers. They join forces with the Japanese maples in autumn to provide a magnificent play of colours. In the spring the park is a riot of blossoming flowers, cherry trees and apple trees. The butterfly garden is the centre of attention in the summertime. Children adore the large lake, and have the opportunity to take part in a ‘hunt’ during the school holidays. They are also keen on the bonsais. You can also relax on one of the many benches or at one of the tables outside the cafeteria.

Practicalities

The garden is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm, except in December and early January. Groups can ask for a customised guided tour. The garden is very easy to reach by train, as it is located just 50 m from Kalmthout station.

Kalmthout Arboretum regularly organises exhibitions workshops and courses and its various premises are available for hire.
